The Routine

What is a Number Talk?

A Number Talk is a short, 10โ€“15 minute classroom routine where students share different strategies for solving a problem mentally โ€” no paper, no pencil, no calculator required.

Every student's idea is respected. The goal isn't the answer โ€” it's the conversation. That shift changes everything about how a math classroom feels.

Number Talks level the playing field. Students who struggle with writing or memorization can shine. All voices belong.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ
Student voice leads Students share reasoning out loud. The teacher listens and records โ€” not judges.
๐Ÿงฎ
No single right path Prompts are designed to have many strategies and many solutions.
โš–๏ธ
Levels the playing field Students who struggle with writing or computation can still shine mathematically.
๐Ÿ”ฅ
Organic every time No two talks are the same, even with the same prompt. That's the point.

Thumbs Up Math

Teachers turned authors โ€” bringing Number Talks to every secondary math classroom.

My Story

Why Number Talks changed everything for me

It started in a 3rd grade classroom. My son MJ's teacher pulled me aside to describe the mathematical thinking he'd shared during their opening Number Talks routine. MJ has Down Syndrome. His whole school life, thinking and connecting ideas had never been the problem โ€” writing and memorization were.

Number Talks gave him a way to do math without being limited by what he couldn't write. He could explain, reason, and belong. That moment lit something in me I couldn't put out.

"Number Talks changed my classroom โ€” my students think outside the box when approaching math problems, and they're not afraid to be wrong."

Hearing Ruth Parker at NCTM stoked the fire further. I brought Number Talks into my high school classrooms, co-wrote four books with my colleague Deb, and have been supporting teachers ever since.

Classrooms that made the shift

Number Talks encouraged my students to think outside the box when approaching math problems. The classroom culture changed within weeks โ€” everyone wanted to share their strategy.

The flip books give me everything I need โ€” the prompt, the tips, even expected wrong answers that spark the best discussions. I've done hundreds of Number Talks and I still open the book.
